It’s quite well known that most ‘new’ phone numbers are actually just recycled, and it can be quite annoying when your new number turns out to have been in use so recently, you still get calls for the previous owner.
But what if you just get your new cell phone home, it rings, and this is one of the first calls you get on it:
LAURA: Hello?
CALLER: Is Chris there?
LAURA: [Puzzled, curiosity piqued] Uh, Chris… who?
CALLER: Chris Rock.
LAURA: [Incredulous] Chris Rock? As in, the Chris Rock?
CALLER: [Seemingly unfazed] Yeah, the Chris Rock.
LAURA: That is so funny! You’re the second person who’s called asking for Chris Rock — I just got a new cell phone, and this is my new number.
CALLER: [Laughs] Well, you’d better get a different one, because I’m sure this is Chris Rock’s number. Oh, wait… now I remember Chris saying something about changing his number….
Well, if you do what Laura did, you can have a lot of fun out of it.
She was more honest than a lot of people would have been, and she did actually get in touch with Chris’ people in order to get a number to pass on to callers. But she also kept the number, and received a lot of calls from well known people, some were nice and some were a-holes. But then she got the call that you were kind of thinking she would….
EDIT: Of course it would be a good idea to put the link in
(Thanks Curmudgeon)
A very good read, all the way through. It also raises the question: What would you have done?

Where’s the link?
Yes, I was er, wondering if anyone would notice me deliberately not putting the link in…
I’m glad you finally included the link. (I realize you were just testing us to see if we were paying attention.) It was a very funny story…
So, Chris, now we see what we need to really promote our blogs: Not just to publish… and publish… but an “email notification list.”
Cool story - I would never have thought Seinfeld would be rude!
I’m sure you’d all love it if I mailed you everytime I posted something…
I don’t know Kai, a lot of these ‘comedians’ are like that.
That was really entertaining. Thanks.
It’s a cool story
