Where Have The Links Gone?

You may have noticed that my links have disappeared from my sidebar. Fear not if you’re amongst them, they are now on a single page titled Blogroll.

Two reasons for me doing this:

  1. It was getting rather long (and is likely to get longer) so this will clean up and speed the loading of the blog.
  2. Google doesn’t like duplicate content, especially duplicate links, and can punish the blog they’re on by giving them a lower ranking. The way Google indexes blogs, is that it will view individual pages and posts as totally seperate items. Consider that I have over 800 posts, over some 40 pages and that means the links are repeated over 840 times whereas now they will appear once. So I look less like a spam blog.

If you would like to do this, and you are on WordPress, I recommend the Categorical links plugin.

You can also now read the alt-text which was previously only visible if you hovered your mouse over the links, so you can see what I’ve been saying about you ;-)

The link in the post works, but not the link in the sidebar.

  2. Chris Says:

The ‘blogroll’ link under pages on the top left?

Works for me. Odd, anyone else having problems, or was it just a glitch?

  3. David Airey :: Creative Design :: Says:

    Works for me.

I’m thinking about doing the same as I read from Andy Beard about duplicate links.

    Hmmmmmmm (thinking).

  4. David Airey :: Creative Design :: Says:

Or you just change your blogroll to rel=”no follow”

    Would that work?

  5. Chris Says:

I’ve seen the problem, there’s another ‘blogroll’ under categories which doesn’t work????

It could work David, but then you’re not giving anyone an Google benefit from linking to them, which may be considered bad form’. People linking with DoFollow are what get you your page rank.

  6. David Airey :: Creative Design :: Says:

    True.

In my case however, those bloggers on my blogroll have been mentioned many times in my blog posts, so I’m sure one less link from my site isn’t going to change much.

I see what you’re saying though and am going to change my comments to ‘do follow’ with a WP plugin.

    getting a 404 mate

  8. Chris Says:

I can’t work this one out Pinksy: the address for the ‘Blogroll’ below the Mybloglog box is wrong, hence the 404.

The link to ‘Blogroll’ higher up, under ‘Pages’ is ok.

    :?:

  9. Pinksy Says:

Yeah, that’s working. Cheers for the link as always.

  10. Chris Says:

Weird, I think it was a WP 2.1/theme related glitch.

I moved the categories widget over to the other sidebar & it fixed it. Go figure :?:

    No problem Pinksinho ;-)
