I have been reading the Waiterrant blog for some time now, and it’s one where you can spend many happy hour reading his archives, because they’re that good.
Waiter (for that is his name) works in a fairly swanky New York bistro, and probably has the tales that most serving staff could relate, but his writing style and observations on life’s truisms are what lifts his blog to the next level:A couple prepare to order, Waiter asks the lady what she would like to drink:
? “A Cosmopolitan”
“Very good Miss,” I say. “And for you sir?”
The man gives me a dirty look. “I’ll be doing the ordering waiter,” he snaps.
I look at the man. Two slate grey holes are where his eyes should be. That’s what’s giving me the creeps. I feel my thousand yard stare revving up but I shut it down. It’s Christmas.
“I’m sorry sir,” I lie. “What would you like to order?”
“The lady will have a Cosmopolitan,” the man says.
Now on full blown Tool alert, Waiter asks the ‘gentleman’ what he would like:
“I’ll have a Belvedere martini up,” the man says. “With a touch of vermouth and a lemon peel.”
“Yes sir.”
“Shaken, not stirred.”
I’ve been a waiter for almost eight years. In all that time I’ve never heard someone use that line – but I’m prepared.
Waiter then proceeds to set the guy up, by asking him if he’d like a ‘Vesper’, a drink created by Ian Fleming for his bond books – the customer has never heard of it, nor Fleming:
“Who?” the man says.
“The man who created James Bond, of course,” I deadpan.
A faint blush colors the man’s cheeks. I have to bite my tongue to keep from snickering. Got you Commander Bond.
“Just get me my martini,” the man says.
“Very good sir,” I say, departing from the table.
Excellent. The post ends with the guy stealing Waiters pen, but Waiter is prepared…
As? I say the quality of the writing is very good,? and the posts range from funny to angry, poignant and sad – it’s no wonder he’s got a book deal out of his blog. I look forward to reading it.
