This must have been horrible:
An overweight woman who got stuck in a South African cave trapped 22 fellow tourists for more than 10 hours and had to be prised free with liquid paraffin.
I have a real fear of getting physically stuck, and underground must be even worse. This was ‘just’ a tourist trip, but the thought of pot-holing does fill me with dread. It would be even worse to then have 20-odd people trapped behind you, including diabetics & asthmatics requiring medication.
It does raise how ridiculous efforts to avoid offending or discriminating people have become: The woman was warned not to go down, but wasn’t prevented from doing so because it may have been discriminatory. No, it’s a matter of safety, hers & and 22 other people. Madness.
I’ve been down the Blue John & Speedwell caverns in Derbyshire (I actually proposed to my wife after visiting the Blue John mine-it must have been the relief at seeing the sun again!), but that’s my limit.
Anyone else been down a big hole in the Earth?

Have you seen The Descent? Some people don’t rate it that well, but I thought it was excellent (compared to another one called The Cave, anyway). Even if you don’t care for the later horror element, the opening scenes of getting lost/stuck in potholes are very claustraphobic…
Which was the one with all the totty in? I should get around to watching that one of these days…. Claustrophobic scenes=not nice.
I’ve been stuck in the elevator a couple times, if that counts a little….
