I guess that makes me a bit SAHD…..

Anyway, it’s true. When we moved to Scotland In Jan 06 I’d quit my job as an? Asbestos Consultant to look after the kids while my wife took a well-paid career job in Aberdeen. The initial impetus of the whole moving to Scotland thing was simply that: we wanted to live in Scotland, and my wifes job opportunity enabled us to do that as quickly as possible. Me looking after the kids initially was simply a financial decision-to cover the cost of childcare for pre-school twins means an income of at least £20k, with no profit.

My job had essentially entailed traveling the country, staying in a hotel 4 nights out of 7 (occasionally 5) and attempting to track down ‘carcinogenic dust in confined spaces’ as a colleague of mine once described it. It was well paid, and I had a nice car, but I only saw my family at weekends, and I’d had enough. I left my job without a glance backwards, and don’t miss it at all.

As the months have gone on (and its a year on the 25th) I’ve enjoyed it more, and although the boys can be Satan incarnate on a bad day, I’d still rather be with them, than in another Travelodge. I’m definitely closer to them, and its nice to sleep in my own bed every night, take them to school & watch them grow. It’s amazing how much they can change even when you’re only away a week, and I had begun to resent that while at work.

So, it was good to find this website, and equally interesting to read this article. I squished my ego many years ago, and it bothers me not that my wife earns the money - she enjoys her job & is very good at it. I prefer baking cakes & rolling around on the floor with the boys to Quality Assurance meetings any day, so there’s been no conflict over the division of labour-although she doesn’t bake Banana Bread often enough anymore!
