Given that my sidebar is about 3 miles long now, and the whole site just doesn’t look Web 2.0 enough, I thought it was time for a re-design.

So, I’d be grateful if you’d have a look at my Test Blog, and let me know what you think of my shiny new template. Feel free to leave comments here or over there. I won’t be changing blog address, just the template.

Oh, and if the left sidebar doesn’t look right to you, its probably because you’re using Internet Explorer – this browser is NOT standards compliant and therefore doesn’t show most modern websites correctly. Do yourself a favour and get a decent browser like Firefox – you’ll be amazed at how much better the internet looks!

Update: For those of you who didn’t like the red, how about the blue? Ta.

It’s okay, not too keen on the colours myself, but I could get used to them! Aren’t you still going to have the same problem with the length of the blogroll, though?

  2. Chris says:

I am, but I’ve got more room on the other sidebar for the other sh..tuff.

I may consider putting it on a separate page soon…

I like the colours, but know what you mean. I wanted a 3 column fluid template, widget ready with a red theme. Rather narrowed my choices down a bit…

  3. Alison says:

The red is more like orange, and it’s nasty.

  4. Chris says:

That’s your crappy Dell monitor ;-)

I can see I’m going to be looking further at this rate….Anyone know of a good source of WP templates other than the WP theme viewer?

This is why I’m running this as a test….

  5. Pinksy says:

Stick with it mate, if you like it!

  6. Pinksy says:

Oh, by the way, you probably ought to check it out in IE7 and Opera as well…

  7. Chris says:

Thanks Pinksy. I know it breaks in IE6, but wonderful IE7 won’t even install on this PC, in fact it totally cocked up Windows Explorer as well.

It’s running on the PC downstairs, which has a smaller CRT monitor so I’ll have a look down there.

I may abandon the ‘red’ idea altogether as the 3 column-fluid is the more important thing for me.

I really hate the idea of having to cater for Microsofts crap browser-all that time on IE7 and they don’t even make it compliant – assholes.

As I say, that’s why I’m testing first, rather than sticking it straight on here, so if anyone else has anything good or bad to say about the test blog I’m happy to hear it. Painting the in-laws kitchen this weekend, so I’ll look for a couple more themes on Monday….

  8. Claire says:

Hey love the layout, but its a thumbs down on the colours! sorry!

  9. Chris says:

Thanks Claire, this theme comes with several colours – what do you reckon to ‘Icy Blue’?

There’s also light blue, a lime green & chocolate.

  10. Claire says:

    This one is much better!

  11. Claire says:

hey you changed it again! this one is still better than first one.

  12. Claire says:

I think the icy blue would work the best with photos, especially your stone circle ones.

  13. Well, I’m thoroughly confused. How are three columns less busy than two? Or am I missing something? It must be some Web 2.0 secret non-technical sorts like myself don’t quite get….

  14. Hey, I like your blog but that new site makes me wonder where to click, I really like this blog you have here. There’s a really cool book on website design called “Don’t Make Me Think”, it’s expensive so just read it in the bookstore ;)

  15. David Airey says:

I dropped off a message at your test site.

  16. Alison says:

    I’m liking the blue.

  17. Alexandra says:

the new one has really nice colors… but I still like this one.

  18. webduck says:

I must be coming in on the new color theme. I like the blue, and I use IE7, so no breaks or complaints here. Looks good to me. :)

  19. nice…I like the blue. The design is nice..easy on the eyes.

did you see my new template? I am just waiting for my buddy to put in my crunchy banner..but the template is MUCH better and widget friendly and all that and comes in a variety of colours too!

  20. Sunflower says:

I prefer this template. It is nicer and clearer.

    I will Exercise for Comments!

    Everybody likes giving opinions ;-)

Thanks for taking the time to do this everyone, it’s much appreciated.

I’m probably more confused now than before….I do need to change this one as it’s not up to current WordPress standards, I can’t use widgets & I don’t think it’ll necessarily take to WP 2.1 & beyond.

Curmudgeon: I like 2 sidebars, as on my other blog, simply because each one is shorter: This one is getting too long, and there’s other things I’d like to add.

Tavis: Thanks, and a good point. I need to keep it simple.

Thanks to the others who commented here, or on the test one.

I’ll do some template hunting & see what I can find, then pop it up on the test blog: If anyone has a template to promote, fire away…

  22. Rose says:

Honestly I don’t like it. This one is cleaner. Your new one does not fit all screen resolutions and I have an annoying horizontal scroll bar. Have you viewed it in all browsers? I also received an error message trying to comment on the new blog in IE, but then have you seen what it looks like in IE. Chris what on earth were you trhinking? lol This one is much better. ;)

  23. erika says:

I like red for you. When I think thermal I think red. The other blog scrolled weird too. Slow Kinda. It would be neat maybe if the bars on the sides didnt move, but the post scrolled? ? ?

  24. Chris says:

Rose: I was thinking, that’s why I put it on a test blog & not straight onto this one…. I do hate the fact that IE is so badly coded it won’t render something that looks perfect in FF.

I agree Erika, I’d like to stick to red/orange as that was the idea from the start.

This one has to go though, as it is not going to work with WP 2.1.

A 3rd test is now up, but I shall keep looking. At least this 3rd one seems ok in IE….

  25. Adam Donkus says:

Stick to the lighter colour backgrounds. What do you think of Jonathan of Smarthwealthyrich.com‘s new site redesign?

  26. Chris says:

This post is 6 months old, you’re looking at the final choice ;-)

You’ve inserted the URL of my hamster picture in there for some reason :?:

  27. Pinksy says:

What do you think of Steven of ChinnyReckon.com‘s new site redesign?

  28. Adam says:

OOps…I had sent the url of the hamster to someone prior to writing the comment…oops.

  29. Chris says:

    Interesting Pinksy…..

  30. Pinksy says:

Admittedly, I was in “one of those moods”
