Meaning Land’s End To John O’Groats, which for those of you not aware of UK topography is the furthest southern point of England, to virtually the furtherest northern point of Scotland. It’s about the longest trip you can do in the UK, around 870 miles depending on who’s measuring, and has long attracted people wishing to travel the length of Britain using a variety of transport for a variety of reasons.
One of those people was David Lomax, a self-confessed novice mountain biker of around 6 months experience, who hit on the idea of doing the trip off-road (increasing the distance to 1200 miles!), with three days ‘preparation’ which largely consisted of booking hotels and printing off maps from the internet. Dear God.
Amazingly his wife didn’t have him sectioned, but agreed to go as well, and the two of them did indeed set off from Lands End 3 days later. They survived long enough to write about it, and the journey so far can be read on the MTB Britain website- Part 3 only takes us up to Shropshire so far, but it is excellently written, very honest, and no matter what your state of fitness you can’t help but wish you’d gone too. Part 4 is coming soon
