My little comments widget on the top left has done it’s stuff and reset to zero for the start of the month.

Who will win this month’s trophy? Rose managed about 112 in January, and I didn’t install the widget until around the 14th! Who can come up with the most hot air this month?

Remember, the top commenters box is click-worthy meaning it counts as a link to your website for Technorati & page rank purposes. Thermal is a PR 4 currently so it’s worth having. Comment away!

;-)

So, the race is on ;op

  2. Chris says:

Working hard? Or hardly working? ;-p

  3. Steph says:

    Bit of both ;op

“Remember, the top commenters box is click-worthy meaning it counts as a link to your website for Technorati & page rank purposes. Thermal is a PR 4 currently so it’s worth having.” Um, not sure what you mean there mate?

  5. Chris says:

When your name’s in the box, it counts as a link to your website for Technorati & Google purposes (Unlike comments the ‘No follow’ attribute is ‘switched off’)

The higher the PR of a link pointing to your website, the more value it has.

Either that, or I’ve been lied to ;-)

It’s marketing Pinksy! And you get a clipart trophy at the end of it, what more do you want, blood? :-)

  6. Pinksy says:

    I’d like some nice sandwiches.

  7. Chris says:

I’ve just had a brie & bacon sandwich thank you, very tasty..

  8. Pinksy says:

    Boots meal deal. Underwhelming.

  9. Chris says:

They sell you a meal, and then give you a deal on Milk of Magnesia?

  10. Pinksy says:

Something like that yes. It’s no better in Nottingham (Clifton area) – Greggs is the only real option. Ask Barnze.

  11. Chris says:

Greggs is never an option – the sole item stocked by the one in Sheffield appeared to be grease in paper bags :-(

  12. Pinksy says:

Oh, don’t tell me about the Greggs bags. They pack one sandwich in about 50 layers of plastic wrapping, cardboard boxes, paper bags, plastic bags. I reckon if they ever excavate the nearest landfill site near my office, most of it will consist of discarded Greggs packaging. Right, that really is my last comment for today…

  13. Alison says:

So, count me in then! I had a lovely freshly made tuna sandwich from the bakers’ down the road. Very tasty.

  14. Chris says:

Just one more Mr Pinksy, they are only ‘waffer thin’…

How did this turn into the lunch post anyway? :-)

  15. Pinksy says:

Didn’t you know? This has already hit the Digg front page as the best “Lunch Post” ever!

  16. Asara says:

I checked my blog’s page rank recently. A big fat 0, how do you like that? :) I don’t mind.. I’d like the extra viewage, but I also don’t want to turn my little personal blog into ad-zilla.. Perhaps I shall find a happy medium :)

  17. Chris says:

What? [goes to look at Digg.....returns] You were just trying to trick me weren’t you? :-( How cruel….

Asara, I really didn’t do anything to get a PR 4, I couldn’t tell you how or why. I think it’s all the shout outs from Skittles :-)

  18. Chris says:

Hey Asara, check again – you have a PR 3 :-)

  19. Asara says:

    LOL!! I can believe that!

  20. Asara says:

whaaaaaat??? where did you find that?? tell tell tell ’cause the last time I looked at something that said PR, I swear it said 0.

  21. Chris says:

I’ve got the Google toolbar installed, and it tells you what the PR is of every page your on – straight from the horses mouth.

They have recently completed an update.

  22. Asara says:

    holy spicoli. wooo! :)
I think I’m going to have a party, after I fix my google toolbar, as I had no idea it had such a nifty gadget attached. Thank you! :)

  23. But I don’t know what a PR 4 is, except that it sounds like a tax form.

    I don’t like tax forms.

  24. Rose says:

I’m not sure if it benefits page rank any as it resets every month.

  25. Rose says:

You can also check your page rank at prchecker.info.Backlinks play a very big role in Google’s pagerank algorithm. The more backlinks that you have the better, but a few good quality links can be beneficial to your blog’s popularity and your ranking.

I almost forgot to mention that WordPress blogs have the rel=no follow tag so links in comments don’t help ones PR at all.

  26. Rose says:

Also I was just viewing Google analytics and I have received 4 hits from your site. :)

  27. Chris says:

    See it works ;-)

no follow is optional on the plugin & I’ve left it ‘off’ for now, generous soul that I am.

  28. Rose says:

I received hits though from sites not using the plugin. The hits could have came from my comments or the link in your blogroll though.

  29. Rose says:

WordPress has rel=”nofollow” set by default for comments. There is a a plugin called ‘DoFollow‘ that you can install. Upon viewing your source it says rel=’external nofollow’? I guess you don’t have no follow turned off on comments. :)

  30. Pinksy says:

Bacon and Eggs. For tea. In case you were wondering.

  31. Chris says:

I was Pinksy, thanks for clearing that up ;-)

Rose: no follow is turned off for the links generated by the top commentators plugin.

I know that no follow is on for the comments (and it’s staying on), I just wish spammers would realise that too.

Thanks for going to the trouble of scanning through my source code – quiet over your way or something? ;-)

  32. Claire says:

I had chicken sandwiches for lunch (from a real chicken)

  33. Pinksy says:

Claire I hope it was free range

  34. erika says:

Wow. SOMEONE already has 29. I don’t think I will be winning this month either. yikes

  35. Chris says:

Pinksy is a comment tart ;-)

  36. Pinksy says:

I’m just in one of those stoopid moods today, sorry. It’ll wear off by tomorrow.

  37. Rose says:

Rose says “I almost forgot to mention that WordPress blogs have the rel=no follow tag so links in comments don’t help ones PR at all.”

Chris says “no follow is optional on the plugin & I’ve left it ‘off’ for now, generous soul that I am.”

Silly me I read that wrong and I thought you were saying that you had it turned off on comments so I viewed the source.

I also learned today that you need a plugin to turn off no follow on comments.

    Learn something every day!

  38. Chris says:

Pinksy, go for it mate, I enjoyed our ‘comment chat’ yesterday, though it was hard work following all the threads :-)

  39. David Airey says:

I can’t believe Pinksy has almost made the 40 comment mark already! Do you work??

  40. Pinksy says:

Admittedly I was slacking a bit yesterday, yes…

  41. Claire says:

    No not free range, Morrisons.

  42. Alison says:

Pinksy is this months comment ho’ :D

  43. Steph says:

And Alison’s not far behind – get back to work!!

  44. Chris says:

Oi Claire! I’m watching you as well! ;-)
