Whilst I never cease to be amazed at all those reality shows that present us with the lunatics who knock half of their home down before realising they’ve gone too far, I still believe that DIY is an essential skill for any home owner. The key is to know your limits, and to learn how to do what you want before getting your hammer out!

I haven’t always followed this advice however, and once bit off a little more than I could chew while fitting a new kitchen sink. I didn’t realise before starting that the taps (faucets to those of you across the water) were a few inches further to the left on the new sink, a fact that didn’t come to light until just before plumbing them in. A final lack of tools and knowledge required a call to an emergency plumber who made the necessary fixings and the water could flow again. Still, although more cautious now, I still give the DIY a go as it can save you a lot of money if you can do the simple things yourself, and indeed, if you’re about to sell your home, it can help you make some more money by fixing and tidying up all those little jobs that the new owner may not want to do.

So if you’re about to embark on some DIY, first make sure you know what’s required because after all: knowledge is power. Visit a site like DoItYourself.com which has hundreds of super detailed instructions and how-to’s along with some very active forums sharing the knowledge. You can even purchase a DVD for some live action tutorials. Then the next time you do it yourself, you can finish it yourself too!
