I see Bill Gates launched Windows Vista to a largely disinterested world today. I must admit, I’d forgotten all about it.
I have never upgraded the operating system on one of my PC’s – it always seemed like too much work & money, for too little end result. I just wait until I get a new PC before I ‘enjoy’ a new operating system, and I’m certainly not buying more RAM etc. just to support Microsofts latest bloatware.
Will you be bothering to upgrade?

No.
When I am forced, by the steady march of Gates-induced planned obsolescence, to get a new machine, Vista will be standard issue and I will meekly comply with the new standard.
In the meantime, every single upgrade is just another MEMORY HOGGING pain.
I used to be able to listen to music and work on line and have my word processor open (not Word, thank you) — but that was Windows Media Player 10. Now, we have the new and improved WMP 11, that takes so much time to start you’d think tubes had to warm first and hogs so much memory that you can either listen to music OR work on line. But not both.
Hmmmmm. I’m ranting again, aren’t I?
I just ordered a new computer today -getting one put together by the guy at a local computer shop and it will have Windows XP – not Vista. Read my blog from last week titled “Gone Shopping” about the way stores are forcing people to purchase Windows Vista – in my opinion – in this area. The guy I’m getting my computer from said he wouldn’t recommend Vista until it has been on the market a minimum of 6 months to a year!
Rant away Curmudgeon
Hi Jenni, I quite agree, I have never been an early adopter of software in particular. It’s like being a beta tester, but you have to pay for the privilege….
Yep, i am the same as you, no new one until new computer. The small shop where we always go for computers (no chains for us), always has said don’t upgrade until you really have too.
Check out Carol’s vault (on my blogroll) Apparently if you’re not careful, installing Vista will render your XP useless. I.E you couldn’t upgrade your XP PC to Vista & then install your old XP disc on another PC-sneaky!
I am getting a new computer (dell ick) by way of our new tv/phone/internet package.
I think it comes with Vista….so we shall see.
I am just dreading getting all my stuff from this rust bucket transferred over to it.
Free PC with an internet connection? I like the sound of that…
Just link them up with a cross-over cable, shouldn’t take long (famous last words!)
I recently bought a new computer that came with a free Vista upgrade, but from what I’ve been reading I really don’t know if I’ll bother getting it. I normally jump straight on the new versions because I like a laugh and it’s usually funny, but don’t think I can afford to risk the problems you always get before the first (and sometimes second) service pack is out.
Microsoft do like their unpaid beta testers….
I’m sorely tempted by Linux more and more…
I was thinking this last night. If a group of people got together & did a ‘Wordpress’, i.e. simplified it for the normal user, Microsoft could be waving bye bye to the OS market domination.
They profited from IBM’s complacency all those years ago….
Bah. If I ever get a new computer, I’ll deal with whatever Windows happens to be on it. I’m happy on XP right now, and also very low on fundage to get a new computer, SO.. XP it is for me!
