Are You Fronting?

Tempting though it may be, I hope not. Fronting in this case is where somebody insures their car in their name as the main driver, but also has an additional driver on the policy who is actually the main user of the vehicle.

Why do this? Well if you have several years no claims discount (NCD) whereas the additional driver is young or inexperienced, then this could save you hundreds of pounds a year on the cost of your policy. While this sounds like a good idea, what it can actually mean in reality is that if your insurer believes that the additional driver was actually the main driver, they will treat you as uninsured: your claim will get rejected, and the additional driver could be prosecuted and receive points on their licence for driving while uninsured.

As is usual for insurance companies, they would rather do anything than actually pay out on a policy, so quite often the onus will be placed on you to prove that the additional driver is not the main driver in the event of a claim - and if the additional driver is living away from home, such as at university, that’s going to be rather hard to prove, isn’t it?

So next time you arrange your policy, through someone like Liverpool Victoria online car insurance for example, then make sure you specify the main driver correctly - or those few hudred pounds saved, could become thousands of pounds lost.
