I found this on J-Walk, and it’s got some very valid ideas in it: 10 Shopping Tricks That Stores Hate.

  1. Buying Loss Leaders and Leaving
  2. Using Credit and Paying it Off on Time
  3. Saying NO to the Extended Warranty
  4. Activating Your Own Phone With A Cell Phone Company
  5. Shopping in the Store But Buying Online
  6. Buying 1 When its 2 for $5
  7. Opening A Store Credit Card To Get A Discount, Then Cutting It Up
  8. Using Websites to Track 30 Day Price Guarantees
  9. Buying Seasonal Items at Clearance Prices (For Next Year)
  10. Buy “Accessories” on Ebay Rather Than Paying Huge Markups

Follow the link for a full explanation of each, but I’ve used most of them and they’re true. I particularly like saying no to the extended warranty – If you’re in the UK, did you know that depending on the value, you can get an item repaired even if the warranty has expired? E.g. in law it’s considered reasonable to expect that a £1000 TV will last longer than 12 months, so if it does go pop after 18, get onto the manufacturer.

I saw that website on Digg. I’m not sure that 4 is possible, at least in the UK. And there may be issues with 7 affecting your credit rating, so some of the commenters are saying.

I like the one about the 30 day price guarantee checking websites though…

Hey, I cater for an international audience you know? ;-)

I’ve done 7 loads of times, and not had a problem. I don’t cancel the cards straightaway, just don’t use it. Self-discipline is required for some of these, but No.2 is a favourite of mine.

Yeah, you’re probably right. I’m in the habit of just saying no really.

I’ve done that a couple of times.. got the card just for the discount, and never used it again. And I hear you on the warranties.. a lot of extra money for what? Generally nothing. We did come out on the good side of one once, and got a new camera, but other than that.. not a thing.
Phew.. second place for now.. I think I can live with that! :)
